Is rust on skates bad?
Rusted ice skate blades prevent you from enjoying your time on the ice and may even make it impossible to skate. Left untreated, rust continues to damage the blades, forcing you to invest in a new pair. Fortunately, most minor rusting can be removed using elbow grease and a professional skate sharpener.
How do you clean old ice skates?
If stained or very dirty, you can use baking soda with water. Rub the outside of the skates with banana peels (the inside of the banana peel) after cleaning them to keep the leather flexible, to maintain its elasticity and prevent breakage. To clean the laces, take them off and let them soak in soapy water.

How can I sharpen my skates without a machine?
Use your flat file and begin at the toe or heel and move it across the blade in a diagonal motion. The file should always remain perpendicular to the blade when sharpening. Run the flat file across a blade in one direction 15 to 20 times and then repeat in the opposite direction. Do the same for the other skate.
