How do indoor ice rinks stay frozen?
How does an ice rink stay frozen? The most common method of refrigeration used in keeping an ice rink frozen is an indirect refrigeration system. This is where a liquid refrigerant (often ammonia) absorbs heat from a secondary liquid (often brine) which has absorbed heat from the source.
How cold is an indoor ice rink?
Most ice rinks will keep the air temperature at a brisk 55-65 degrees and the on-ice temperature between 17 and 29 degrees.
How do indoor ice rinks work?
In ice rinks, the refrigerant cools brine water, an anti-freezing agent, which goes through pipes underneath the ice. These steel pipes are typically embedded into a concrete slab and kept at 32 F / 0 C, so that any water placed on top of the slab freezes and becomes the skating surface that we see.
How do ice rinks not melt?
Sure, it’s warm and sunny in Southern California this Christmas, but that won’t stop people from ice skating! Then it’s run through pipes housed in aluminum panels that sit directly under the ice itself, Bietak says. The glycol cools these panels to very cold temperatures and the panels in turn cool the ice above them.
Can you wear jeans to ice skate?
Pants or Leggings Don’t plan to go ice skating while wearing shorts or street dresses. It is best to wear comfortable pants that move and stretch, so jeans are also not a good idea. And don’t worry about dressing up in figure skating dresses for recreational ice skating.

What age is best to start ice skating?
In the figure skating world it’s known that 4, 5 and 6 years old is a good age to start ice skating lessons. 4-6-year-old children pick things up quickly, they learn basic ice skating moves a lot faster than most 2-3-year-olds.
How thick should an ice rink be?
Cold nights are key, since you’ll build more ice during those lower nighttime temperatures than the higher daytime temperatures can melt it and you will be gaining ice thickness each night. Typically, an ice thickness of 3-4 inches (8-10 cm) will hold most kids and average-size adults.
How much does a Zamboni cost?
As the sizes and options of the Zamboni machines vary greatly according to each ice arena’s individual needs, so does the price. The Model 100 (a small tractor pulled unit) may be in the neighborhood of $10,000.00 or more and the full-sized machines can be up to or in the low six figures.
Is hockey played on real ice?
Everybody knows that hockey is played on ice and ice is frozen water. But did you know that not all ice is the same? It turns out that the temperature and chemistry of the ice makes a big difference. Hockey players prefer what is known as “fast ice” which is harder and colder with a smooth, slippery surface.
Why is ice slippery if it is above F?
Recently it has been discovered that the outermost layer of ice is always made up of a thin ‘quasi liquid’. The topmost layer has no neighbours above it, and thus the water molecules can move more freely. The layer is extremely thin, only 10–20 nanometres thick, but it is enough to make the ice slippery.
How cold is it in a curling rink?
The standard for curling ice is to measure the air temperature and humidity at a height of 1.5m and aim to achieve 8ºC and 40% relative humidity (dew-point temperature of – 4.3ºC at 1.5m), with the ice- surface temperature at – 4.5ºC.
How do they put ice rinks in arenas?
When it’s time to convert an ice hockey rink to a basketball court, the walls and glass panels around the rink are removed. Then large pieces of insulated plywood are laid out over the top of the ice. After the game, the process is reversed to get the arena ready for the next ice hockey game.
